Sam Thompson on being diagnosed with ‘mortifying’ STI: ‘I don’t even hide it’

He said 'it was a really hard time' for him

Sam Thompson previously recalled his horror after being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.

The TV favourite has become a regular on TV screens in recent years, after he shot to fame on reality show Made in Chelsea. From stints on This Morning to winning I’m A Celebrity…, Sam’s career has gone from strength to strength.

However, a few years back, Sam – who is on Deal or No Deal Celebrity Special today (August 9) – candidly admitted that he had previously had an STI.

Sam Thompson’s ‘mortifying’ STI diagnosis

In 2028, Sam joined Public Health England’s Protect Against STIs campaign to raise awareness about STIs and using protection when having sex. And, according to Sam, he revealed he previously had chlamydia.

“I don’t even hide it, I had an STI when I was travelling and I was mortified and incredibly embarrassed that I had to tell the girl I like. So if I can help anyone else with that problem…,’ he told Metro.

The TV favourite went on: “I couldn’t have cared less about the condom on the banana [from school sex ed classes], but the times are rapidly moving forward and I want to keep up with that.”

He continued: “I’m a normal boy, you live and you learn. Everyone sees you on the television, and think because you’re on TV you must have the perfect life. Everyone is human and we all go through these experiences and learn and grow up. I’m proud to say I learned from that, I don’t think I’m a bad guy – I’m just misinformed.”

‘It was a really hard time’ for Sam

Sam – who recently split from Zara McDermott – also opened up about the ordeal to Femail, and said: “It was as a result of making the mistake of not using a condom when I slept with someone new.

“It was a really hard time for me, I had to face the embarrassment of telling a girl I really liked that I’d potentially given her an STI. I was quite nervous to admit to everyone, but actually I think the more we talk about these things the better.”

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria. It often has no noticeable symptoms, but if left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems.

If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which can cause infertility or ectopic pregnancy. In men, it can cause epididymitis, which can also affect fertility.

Treatment with antibiotics is usually effective.

Watch Sam on Deal or No Deal Celebrity Special on Saturday (August 9) at 5:00pm on ITV1.
