Opinion: It’s time to give Mary a big storyline as she hits 15 years on Coronation Street

She deserves more than telling a few jokes

Mary Taylor has been a key part of Coronation Street for 15 years but it’s time she’s given a big storyline.

Tonight (Friday, September 19), saw Mary have the time of her life singing karaoke in Todd and Theo’s new flat. Christina wasn’t best pleased that the limelight had been taken from her though…

Giving us some great comedic moments, Mary never fails to make us laugh. But, the character deserves a more substantial storyline.

Mary Taylor – the life and soul of the party

Mary had her fair share of Corrie scenes tonight as she started off the day by a shift at the flower shop.

Unfortunately though, a power cut meant that she needed to shut up shop early. While Mary was ready to go old school and spend time in a huddle with Tracy cracking jokes or learning a new language, Tracy ‘love’ wasn’t as keen.

With this, Mary decided to lend Todd Grimshaw a helping hand unboxing and cleaning in the flat in preparation for Millie and Miles’ visit.

The gathering then ended up turning into a small party as Mary asked Theo to be her dancing partner.

She then battled with Christina Boyd over who would have the first go on the karaoke microphone.

Mary won the battle, and enjoyed having a singsong to a bit of Aretha Franklin.

Opinion: Give Mary her time to shine in a new Coronation Street storyline

Over recent years, Mary’s given us some great laughs and tells some great tales which mostly go something like ‘as mother used to say…’

She’s got all the elements of a classic Corrie character, but she’s sadly not used for much else.

Mary’s scenes can best be described as ‘filler’ scenes which seems unfair for someone who has been on the cobbles for a decade and a half.

Mary Taylor‘s peak era was when she was living in her mobile home, faking a marriage to Norris. And, after this, her most memorable heavy storyline was when her compulsive liar son Jude rocked up on the Street.

The character has proved to be a great friend to many, with a huge heart. But, she’s rarely thrown into the centre of a major storyline. And, this needs to change.

Patti Clare has the ability to act in emotional and hard-hitting storylines as well as the more light-hearted ones and it’s baffling how Mary’s often sidelined.

Give Mary a lover, an issue-based storyline, anything. Anything with a little bit more substance. The soap should use her or it’s at risk of losing her. And, we don’t want that!
