Kate, Princess of Wales, shares a close bond with her father in law King Charles. In recent years, that relationship has grown even stronger, particularly as both have faced cancer treatment.
The Princess of Wales, who turned 44 in January, completed her treatment in September 2024. At the time, she said her focus was on staying cancer free. Meanwhile, the king continues to undergo treatment, although he has remained active in his duties and reports suggest his treatment has been reduced.
So how have they supported one another during such a difficult period? Here is a closer look.

Princess Kate shares close relationship with King Charles
Kate and Charles have long enjoyed a warm relationship. Over the years, they have been seen sharing affectionate moments in public, and the king has often spoken fondly about his daughter in law.

For example, in January 2024, King Charles and Queen Camilla shared a heartfelt message to mark Kate’s birthday.
However, their connection appeared to deepen even further after both were diagnosed with cancer in 2024. Charles first announced his diagnosis in February, while Kate shared hers the following month.

At the time of Kate’s announcement, the king released a statement praising her bravery. He said he was “so proud” of Kate for having the “courage” to speak publicly about her diagnosis. Buckingham Palace also confirmed that he was in the “closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law”.
How Kate and Charles supported each other through cancer ordeals
Following Kate’s diagnosis, reports suggested that she and the king spent time together privately at Windsor Castle.
According to one source, the pair shared an emotional lunch as they navigated their respective health challenges.

“It is highly unusual for just the two of them to sit down together like this. The king had already been made aware that the woman he calls ‘my beloved daughter-in-law’ had cancer.
“There’s no doubt that cancer has cemented an already strong relationship.
“They would have had lots to discuss and share because just weeks earlier the king had begun his course of treatment and dealt with announcing his diagnosis.”
The insider continued by describing the emotional impact of the meeting. “The king left his lunch feeling very emotional. They are very close and he thinks of Catherine as his daughter. There is no doubt there is a lot they can share and can use each other for support during their own deeply personal cancer battles.”
In addition, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has previously suggested that their shared experience may have strengthened their bond even further.
She told OK! days after Kate’s cancer announcement: “I noticed in the king’s statement of support after Kate’s broadcast he said he was in the ‘closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law’.
“I was struck by the fact that he didn’t say close, but closest. There’s no doubt that cancer has cemented an already strong relationship.”
