King Charles’ affectionate nickname for Queen Elizabeth II which he used in public speech

Nearly four years after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a sweet moment between the late monarch and her eldest son has resurfaced.

In 2018, at a concert held at the Royal Albert Hall to mark the Queen’s 92nd birthday, then-Prince Charles stood beside his mother to deliver a speech.

King Charles calls Queen Elizabeth II ‘mummy’ in speech

Charles began by formally addressing his mother as “Your Majesty”, before adding a word that drew laughter from the crowd: “Mummy.”

The queen herself was seen giving what many interpreted as an eye-roll before chuckling along.

“I have a feeling,” Charles joked. “That in 1948, when you were 22, you didn’t somehow expect that at your 92nd birthday you’d find your son in his 70th year.”

That wasn’t the first, or last, time Charles used the endearing nickname at an official event.

The very first known public use came back in 1998, when Queen Elizabeth II hosted a reception in Buckingham Palace’s ballroom to mark Charles’ 50th birthday.

The queen opened the evening by calling him “Charles”. When it came time for Charles to speak, he responded: “Mummy… coupled with Your Majesty!”

It occurred again during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and at her Platinum Jubilee in 2022, just months before her death.

Clips of these moments have recently resurfaced online, causing social media users to flood the comments with admiration.

“A child never gets too old to call their mother ‘Mummy’,” one user wrote.

“Once a mama’s boy, always a mama’s boy,” added another.

“Look how she giggled with her shoulders in the first clip. Oh, how we miss our beautiful queen,” one fan observed of the queen’s reaction.

Queen Elizabeth II nicknames

When Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, Charles ascended the throne at 73.

In his first speech as King Charles, delivered from Buckingham Palace the following evening, he addressed the nation and paid tribute to his mother.

“To my darling Mama,” Charles began. “As you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you.

“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Although she reigned for more than 70 years and was known across the world as “Her Majesty,” Queen Elizabeth II was simply “Mum,” “Granny,” and “Gan-Gan” to those closest to her.

She herself had grown up with the nickname “Lilibet,” famously used by her father, King George VI, and later by her husband, Prince Philip.

The name was later chosen by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their daughter Lilibet Diana. They welcomed little Lilibet, Queen Elizabeth II’s great-granddaughter, in June 2021.
