Ruth Langsford admits ‘mum guilt’ on This Morning over son Jack
Speaking to Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard on Monday, Ruth opened up about her son Jack. She shares Jack with her ex Eamonn Holmes.
In the book, she says that she felt “mum guilt” as Jack was growing up.
Ruth said on This Morning: “I don’t know where mum guilt comes from, we just put it on ourselves. I’m not saying dads don’t feel guilt for working as well, but I’m just talking from my own experience.
“I used to feel terribly guilty. I always thought Jack will think whoever is looking after him, the nanny, the childminder, he’s going to think that’s his mum and they don’t.
“They don’t even remember. I say to lots of younger women, don’t beat yourself up about it. You’re feeling it but, as long as the baby is cared for and looked after, they don’t remember half of it.”
Ruth reveals impact of empty nest syndrome
Ben then asked Ruth about empty nest syndrome. Ruth’s son Jack moved out of the family home to attend university in 2020.
She has previously opened up about her heartache over her son no longer being around the house.
Speaking on This Morning, Ruth said: “It is a very real thing. It surprised me how strong the feelings were.
“I knew I’d be sad that he was going and I knew I would miss him. But I thought, I’ve got a full life, I love my work, I’ve got lots of friends, I’m a busy woman.
He went off to uni and never really came home.
“I didn’t think it would affect me in the way it did. It was literally like having half my heart ripped out.”
Ruth admitted it was the aftermath of dropping Jack off at uni which she struggled with the most. She said: “It was being at home and realising I wasn’t going to see him. Like teenagers don’t want to spend time with you. He was always in his room or out with his mates. But you set eyes on them every day don’t you.
“I missed seeing his trainers piled up at the bottom of the stairs. It was that, just not physically laying eyes on him once a day. He went off to uni and never really came home and that was him done. He’s having a great time.”
However, Ruth said she’s happy for her son as he has started his life.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and ITVX.
