The Pride of Britain Awards were broadcast on ITV last night (Thursday, October 23). And, while viewers were moved by some of the inspirational stories they heard, another detail from the night left them livid.
Complaints poured in as many viewers were left furious by the amount of money was raised by the celebs who attended.
£50k raised during Pride of Britain Awards
Last night saw the Pride of Britain Awards air on ITV, where some of the most inspirational people in the country had their selfless achievements celebrated.
The show, which was hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman, saw people from all walks of life who had worked tirelessly to raise awareness, raise money for charities, campaign to make changes to laws and legislation, and save lives, be celebrated.
During the show, Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks, as well as Anne-Marie and Al Murray, explained to Marcus Skeet, a 17 year old who ran the length of the UK, that to help set up running groups organised by mental health charity Mind, they needed some donations.
Sam and Pete kicked things off by donating £5,000 to the cause.
Later in the show, it was revealed that Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne had donated £20,000. The Pride of Britain had also donated £10,000, P&O Cruises had donated £5,000, and a GoFundMe had received £5,000 in donations.
Ashley Banjo revealed that, including the donations from celebs in the audience, £50,000 had been raised for Mind’s Marcus Mover’s running groups.
Viewers slam ‘tight’ celebs
Marcus Skeet was overwhelmed by the amount of donations. However, viewers were not impressed at all that, between them, the celebs in the audience had only donated £5,000 (excluding Duncan’s £20k, and Sam and Pete’s £5k).
“So you’re telling me that out of all those celebs, they only donated 10k? #prideofbritain gave 10k, P&O 5k, GoFundMe 5k, and Duncan Bannatyne 20k, but they only raised a total of 50k. Those celebs should be ashamed,” one viewer tweeted.
“Pete & Sam – £5,000, Duncan Bannatyne – £20,000, #PrideOfBritain – £10,000, P&O – £5,000, Go Fund Me – £5,000 =£45,000. Rest of the room? £5,000. YOU TIGHT [BLEEPS]!! You probably spent more than that on your outfits!” another viewer raged.
“So in a room full of celebrities and influencers, they only donated 5k between them for mental health? LOL I have no words,” a third said.
Celebrities slammed by Pride of Britain Awards viewers
“Only £50,000. Make everyone in that room donate at least £1,000,” another said.
“So, £20k from Duncan, £10k from POB’s charity, £5k from P&O, and £5k from GoFundMe, and they only raised £50k with all those millionaires in the room?” another asked.
“They are there only for their own self-promotion. They should hang their heads in shame,” a sixth viewer fumed.
