Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has revealed that soap bosses had decided to ‘kill off’ David Platt before changing their minds.
At the recent ‘Audience with Coronation Street’ tour, Jack confessed that David Platt almost didn’t live to reach 25 years on the cobbles.

Jack P Shepherd goes on tour with Coronation Street co-stars
Some of the biggest Coronation Street stars are currently out on tour as part of ‘An Audience with Coronation Street,’ a live show hosted by Sharon Marshall.
The tour sees the stars talk about the time on the iconic soap, sharing big secrets and behind-the-scenes gossip.
On Saturday night (September 20), Jack P Shepherd joined fellow cast mates Patti Clare, Jane Danson, Jimmi Harkishin and William Roache at the Lowry Theatre in Salford.
Talking about hitting 25 years on the soap as David Platt this year, Jack then revealed that this was never the plan.
Back when David was a teenager, Corrie writers had actually decided that David was a villain. And, he needed to die.

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd reveals Corrie bosses wanted to ‘kill off’ David Platt
Speaking at the Lowry, David Platt star Jack shared: “They were going to kill me off because I’d done bad things, and it’s like anything, each character goes through bad scenarios and if they keep doing bad things, they have to get rid of them, don’t they? The soap gods get you.
“I found out at a writer’s meeting that they’d just killed me off. They’d just decided to.”
He then explained that ‘they’d worked out David’s exit storyline and were going to kill him off’ during his teenage years.
“What changed their minds was that I did a scene where I blamed Gail about Richard Hillman, and I think the scene was typically written where David would lash out at his mum and storm upstairs, slam the door, like a usual teenage soap scene.
“I played it a little differently and I was just very matter of fact and was a bit more sincere with what he actually believed and thought. And that’s when they went ‘oh maybe he’s alright and maybe there is a way back for his character. Maybe this lad’s quite good and we’ll try and keep hold of him.” And, good job they did!
Coronation Street usually airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV.
