Mal Roper held Bernie against her will

As the episode began, Dev Alahan and Asha Alahan got ready to head off on a short father-daughter trip, with Dev letting Bernie Winter know they would be back on Wednesday. Bernie waved them off before heading to work, unaware of what was about to unfold.

With Roy Cropper stepping out and leaving Bernie in charge of the café, Mal Roper seized his moment. Alone with Bernie, he refused to take the hint when she asked him to leave and come back another day. Instead of exiting, Mal locked the door and insisted she listen to him, his agitation growing by the second.

Mal admitted he had feelings for Bernie Winter, bringing up their hotel kiss while she was high. Bernie was quick to shut him down, reminding him she hadn’t returned the kiss and that she loved Dev. But Mal refused to accept her rejection, moving closer and trapping her, hurling cruel remarks as the situation became increasingly frightening.

The ordeal only ended when Kit Green started knocking at the door, forcing Mal to back off.

Later, after drinks at the Rovers with Kit and Gemma Winter, Bernie returned home alone to a chilling discovery. Her face had been cut out of her wedding photo with Dev. Mal had clearly been in the house, and a shaken Bernie knew she couldn’t stay there.

As the week continues, Mal’s actions finally catch up with him. Bernie reaches breaking point and confronts him, presenting the vandalised wedding photo as proof he’s crossed a dangerous line. Mal denies everything, but Bernie isn’t fooled and issues a stark ultimatum – leave for Inverness or she’ll go straight to the police.

Tensions rise again when Tracy Barlow mentions that Ken Barlow is looking for a reliable electrician. Oblivious to the danger, Roy starts praising Mal, only for Bernie to step in urgently, warning Tracy to stay well clear. Roy is left confused, but Bernie knows exactly what she’s dealing with.

Later, a knock at the door sends Bernie into panic mode as she grabs a golf club, only to find Kit there instead. Shaken, she finally opens up about Mal’s behaviour and the frightening night she endured. But Mal refuses to back down, storming into the café and causing a scene that forces Roy to throw him out.

The drama reaches a shocking climax when Mal is found badly injured in the street and rushed to hospital in critical condition. Before Bernie can even process what’s happened, the police arrive and arrest her on suspicion of assault. Bernie insists she’s innocent, maintaining that Mal has been stalking her. With Mal fighting for his life and Bernie facing serious accusations, the fallout from this storyline is only just beginning.
