Comedian Peter Kay has revealed he had to undergo “emergency surgery” which had him “howling” in pain.

In his book, Peter Kay’s Diary, which is out today (October 8), the comedian opened up about being “shocked” to hear how “deranged” his kidney function was.

In his March entry, Peter documented an extremely “painful” time for him, several years ago.

Peter Kay’s ’emergency surgery’

The 52-year-old comic explained that he was on a train in London, when he felt severe stomach pains. Then two days later, he had a throbbing pain in his lower back. But when he googled his symptoms, he decided to take a trip to the hospital.

He wrote in his book: “Fast forward 24 hours, and my suspicions were confirmed via CT scan at the local hospital. It turned out I had a big stone block in the exit of my right kidney.”

Peter admitted he was “reassured” by the doctor, but was told he needed “emergency surgery to remove the kidney stone”. Not only that, but he would have a stent fitted in his urethra.

He explained: “My pre-op bloods confirmed his suspicions that, apparently, my kidney functions were deranged. Well, that’s how the nurse delicately put it. As much as I was in shock, I was also relieved and felt vindicated. I actually had something wrong with me, and it wasn’t just hypochondria.”

Peter experienced ‘legendary’ pain

The star admitted the pain he felt was so “legendary” that he was “sobbing” and making “high pitched howling and whining sounds”.

As for the surgery itself, Peter was told it would be a small camera with a laser that would “blast” the kidney stone away. But then he realised the camera would be going in via his private parts!

When he made this connection, Peter admitted his “world collapsed”. But in the end, the procedure took place and went well.

However, Peter was left in pain for a week, until he had to get the stent removed the same way. But he was shocked when he was told he didn’t need pain relief.

Peter penned: “The urologist said I didn’t need any pain relief. He said it would be a walk in the park. Though, I don’t know which park he walks through. It was painful and unpleasant and a dreadful experience.”
