Mrs Brown’s Boys star reveals why he turned down mega-bucks Celebrity Big Brother offer

And his co-star rejected I'm A Celebrity

Mrs Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll has turned down £150,000 to appear on Celebrity Big Brother this coming January.

The comedy star told The Daily Star: “I had a tentative chat about Celebrity Big Brother but I just decided it’s not for me.

“I’d be homesick.”

He also let slip that his son Danny, who plays Buster in the smash hit, knocked back a stint on I’m A Celebrity.

“He was asked to do the jungle but turned it down,” revealed the 62-year-old. “He hates spiders.”

Not that Brendan and his clan have anything against celebs doing reality shows – his wife Jennifer Gibney, who plays Cathy in the show, was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

Although, perhaps she inadvertently put them off as she was “exhausted” by the time she was kicked off.

There’s no danger of Brendan needed to take part in a reality show to bolster his popularity right now though.

Mrs Brown’s Boys proved to be the jewel in the BBC’s festive TV crown, snaring 6.8million viewers and earning the accolade of most-watched show on Christmas Day.

It triumphed over the Strictly Come Dancing special, last year’s winner, which bookies had expected to win again this year.

Instead, 6.5 million tuned in for Strictly’s festive episode, while in 2016 an average audience of 7.2 million watched Len Goodman’s final appearance on the panel.

BBC1 enjoyed six of the top 10 shows on Christmas Day, with figures expected to rise over the coming days as TV fans watch on catch-up.

Hit soap EastEnders’ dramatic episode and period drama Call The Midwife were third and fourth, both with 6.3 million.
