Celine Dion fans in tears over Eurovision’s ‘tribute’ to star as she battles stiff person syndrome

Singer was diagnosed with the incurable condition three years ago

A Celine Dion ‘tribute’ during the first Eurovision semi-final on Tuesday (May 14) night had fans in tears amid the superstar singer’s health battle.

The Canadian singer, 57, lives with incurable stiff person syndrome following a diagnosis nearly three years ago.

In an emotional return to the song contest after previously confirming she would not be perform or attend this year’s final in Switzerland, Celine’s appearance was hyped and welcomed by Eurovision commentator Rylan Clark.

But fans watching at home were also thrilled to see the former winner make an appearance, even if it wasn’t in person.

Back in 1988, Celine won Eurovision, representing Switzerland, when she sang Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.

She reflected how the victory proved “life-changing” as her music career soared in the following years.

“I’d love nothing more than to be with you,” Celine said in a video message.

She went on: “Switzerland will forever hold a special place in my heart. It’s the country that believed in me and gave me the chance to be part of something so extraordinary.

She chuckled: “Now, 37 years later… I know! It’s so beautiful and emotional to see Switzerland winning and hosting this incredible event once again.”

Celine signed off: “To the people of Switzerland, thank you for your love. This night is yours and I hope you feel as proud as I do.”

What is stiff person syndrome?

Stiff person syndrome is a rare neurological condition that causes muscles in the torso and limbs to tense uncontrollably.

The incurable condition affects one in a million people and can leave sufferers unable to walk or talk.

Celine previously told NBC News her experience of it felt like ‘being strangled’.

She’s also said of her symptoms: “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”
