Manpreet Sharma’s struggle in Emmerdale: Hostage ordeal to Meena’s wrath

She's got a lot of questions to answer!

Manpreet Sharma in Emmerdale has had a rough few months after being held hostage by psychotic sister Meena Jutla and then hit by a car once she escaped.

The local GP then witnessed her colleague and friend Dr Liam Cavanagh trying to kill Meena and has lied to the police over it.

Now Meena’s out for her sister’s blood – which by her standards, could be quite literally.

Will things get any easier for Manpreet?

When did Manpreet arrive in Emmerdale?

Dr Manpreet Jutla arrived in the village to cover for GP Liam Cavanagh. She caught the eye of older man Rishi Sharma and the pair started dating.

But Rishi’s son, Jai, wasn’t keen on Manpreet and eventually discovered what she was hiding – she had a spending addiction and owed money.

After she and Rishi got married in Vegas, he bailed her out leaving Manpreet feeling guilty about how much trouble she’d caused her new husband.

Manpreet’s spending habits, though, were really the least of the secrets she’d been keeping!

What is Manpreet’s secret in Emmerdale?

When Manpreet’s sister Meena arrived in the village she had lots to say about her big sister’s life before she lived in Emmerdale.

It turned out that many years before, Manpreet – who was married to ex-husband Dennis at the time – had a romance with new vicar Charles Anderson.

She’d told him her name was Saira and grown close to him and his young son, Ethan.

The pair planned to wed, with Manpreet encouraging Charles to splash out on wedding prep.

But then – obviously – she scarpered back to Dennis and their daughter Aiesha, leaving Charles bewildered and heartbroken.

Dennis went on to have affairs, including one with manipulative Meena, and the pair divorced.

Estranged from her sister, and with her shopping addiction taking hold, Manpreet came to Emmerdale.

When Manpreet saw Charles again, all her old feelings came rushing back. She realised she no longer loved Rishi and ditched him last year.

She and Charles are giving things another go, but Meena’s meddling is causing more than a few bumps along the way.

How old is Manpreet in Emmerdale? Is she Meena’s mum?

Fans have been confused about Manpreet and Meena’s relationship since the younger sibling arrived in the village.

With Meena around 20 years younger than her big sister, the age gap made viewers scratch their heads and many assumed there was going to be a twist in their relationship and that Manpreet would be revealed to be Meena’s mum.

In fact, there can’t be much of a difference between Meena and Manpreet’s daughter Aiesha in age.

But the predicted reveal didn’t happen!

The big age difference though is a puzzler.

When Meena reminisced about the siblings’ childhoods as she was holding Manpreet captive, fans were confused as Manpreet would have been grown up before Meena was born.

And thinking about Meena having an affair with Manpreet’s husband made a lot of viewers feel uncomfortable. Just how old was Ms Jutla when that romance happened?

Who plays Manpreet in Emmerdale?

Manpreet is played by accomplished actress Rebecca Sarker. She’s no stranger to soap having starred as Nita Desai in Corrie.

Nita’s brother Vikram was played by Chris Bisson – who now plays Rebecca’s on-screen stepson, Jai Sharma!

Is Manpreet Sharma dead in Emmerdale?

Manpreet has (so far!) managed to stay alive despite Meena’s various attempts to kill her.

Meena first held her sister hostage when Manpreet figured out exactly what she was capable of and even met up with Nadine’s sister.

After they were both caught up in the Woolpack explosion at Christmas, Meena managed to kidnap Manpreet.

She soon decided she would kill her sister in seven days time, and dragged her to a remote barn.

Suspicious Vinny Dingle turned up and was captured too.

As Meena tried to gas them both inside the barn, Liam turned up and saved the day.

Manpreet was in a bad way, but managed to follow Meena into the woods. However, Manpreet was then hit by a car driven by Charles.

She was in a coma in hospital, but woke up and told the police about her sister.

Is Manpreet leaving Emmerdale?

Manpreet is really struggling in the wake of everything Meena has done. Her guilt over bringing her sister to the village in the first place has made her question whether she should stick around.

Charles has persuaded her to stay, but when Meena returned for more revenge and hurt more villagers, it was yet another blow for Manpreet.

She witnessed Meena goading Liam and taunting him about how she killed Leanna, and then Manpreet saw Liam push Meena off the bridge.

Manpreet has lied to the police to protect Liam, but Meena is doing everything in her power to bring her sister down too.

Meena has told the cops Manpreet was the one who killed Andrea Tate – and she was pretty convincing about it too.

Manpreet was questioned and released, but will Meena give up? It’s not likely…

When the pressure gets too much, Manpreet flees Meena’s plea hearing.

She ditches her car and phone and concern grows when she’s nowhere to be found.

Is she okay? Has she left the village for good? Or will she be back?
