Thomas Markle has spoken out about his daughter, Meghan Markle, returning to the UK with Prince Harry and their children. He claimed he learnt about the family’s plans through the news rather than from Meghan herself.
The remarks come as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the UK continues to attract attention. Thomas said the development had increased his fears that he may never meet his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Thomas Markle shares “hurt and upset” message to daughter Meghan
Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Thomas claimed he remains in hospital and feels pushed out of Meghan’s life.
He said: “I’m hurt and upset that she doesn’t give a damn about me, even though I’m in hospital.”
Thomas also reflected on the close relationship he said they once shared. He described Meghan as a former “daddy’s girl” and claimed he now feels as though he no longer exists to her.
Despite their estrangement, Thomas insisted he still loves his daughter. However, he said he could not understand why she had turned her back on him.
Thomas says he has never met Archie and Lilibet
Thomas then addressed his lack of contact with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. He said he has never met either child and fears their reported departure from America could make that prospect even more remote.
He also claimed the children may eventually ask about their other grandfather. Thomas suggested that he believes Meghan and Harry feel ashamed of him.
However, his message ended with hope that Archie and Lilibet might one day understand his feelings.
He said: “I hope they know how much I wanted to meet them.”
Thomas and Meghan’s relationship deteriorated after he posed for paparazzi photographs before her 2018 wedding to Harry. The father and daughter subsequently became estranged.
How Thomas learnt about the UK return
Thomas claimed that he discovered the family’s plans while watching the news rather than through direct contact with Meghan.
He told The Mail on Sunday: “I saw on CNN that they were returning to England. I found out about it at the same time as the rest of the world.”
Harry and Meghan have lived in the United States for several years. They are now returning to the UK with Archie and Lilibet.
Speculation has focused on where the Sussex family could settle, with the Cotswolds among the locations mentioned. It has also been reported that Archie and Lilibet are expected to start at new schools in Britain in early September.
