Dad-of-four Wayne, 33, called out 58-year-old Jonathan nine years after the TV host likened him to a “gorilla” ahead of the World Cup.

During his conversation with Eddie, The Sun reports that the footballer said: “Get me a fight with Jonathan Ross.”

Eddie said he would love to see Wayne put his boxing skills to the test but added that Wossy might not be the best opponent in a match.

Wayne, who currently plays for DC United in the US, then replied: “I don’t care, I just want to get into a ring with him.”

When Eddie then questioned if the Manchester United legend doesn’t like Jonathan, he apparently went quiet.

The ill feeling may have begun when Jonathan mocked Wayne before the South Africa World cup in 2010.

He said: “If you want a mascot, don’t look further than Wayne Rooney. He doesn’t even need the suit. ‘And now we bring out our mascot, the gorilla’, and Rooney comes lumbering out.”

In 2011, Jonathan took another dig at Wayne when he was listed on a Dad of the Year poll.

He joked: “Wayne Rooney is on the list — is that in a separate category for people with tails?”

According to the publication, Wayne also listed Jonathan as his least favourite celebrity on his list of dislikes.

It could be quite a tale of the tape.
