Celebrity Traitors star Tom Daley opens up on heartbreaking body dysmorphia battle: ‘It was a dark time’

The star has opened up about the 'dark times'

Celebrity Traitors star Tom Daley has heartbreakingly admitted that he still struggles with body dysmorphia. The former Olympic diver, 31, has been open about his struggles with an eating disorder during his time in the sport.

He’s now further opened up about the “dark times” in a new interview.

Tom revealed that his eating disorder started at the end of 2011, when he was “told he was overweight”. The star had previously revealed in his 2021 memoir that pressure from the industry before the 2012 London Olympics led to him developing body dysmorphia.

As well as the pressure on what he looked like, Tom was also told that funding for diving was going to be cut if they didn’t win a medal, telling Radio Times he struggled “with all kinds of things” in the build-up, including anxiety issues and eating disorders.

Tom Daley still struggles with body dysmorphia

Tom has previously opened up about how he would make himself “throw up” during training in 2012. Now, he’s admitted he had “no idea what he was doing”.

“I had absolutely no idea what I was doing at the time, so I just cut out food. I was just not fueling myself appropriately,” he told the site.

Tom then went on to explain that he wasn’t allowing himself enough calories to train properly. As a result, he would get so hungry that he would binge. “I’d feel so bad that I was bulimic for a while. It was a dark time because I didn’t have anyone to talk to about it. Men weren’t meant to talk about their eating disorders back then. Or feelings at all.”

The star admitted that he still struggles with body dysmorphia, but said his husband, Dustin Lance Black, 51, has been a huge support. “It’s a big thing in the gay world if I’m honest. Some people have very unrealistic body expectations.”

The Olympic diver was a firm fan favourite on the BBC show, creating a viral meme with his ‘side eye’ to Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway.

However, he was too much for the cunning Traitors Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr and Cat Burns, as he became the second Faithful to be murdered.

The Traitors went on to murder three more Faithfuls after Tom, with another five since being banished. But will one of them finally be caught during tonight’s episode?

Despite his early exit from the BBC show, fans needn’t fear. Tom is set to return to screens for his new Channel 4 series, The Game of Wool: Britain’s Best Knitter. Fans can catch the show when it airs on Sunday (November 2).
