Prince Harry opened up about his California life and showed off his best American accent in a new interview with US comedian Hasan Minhaj.

Appearing on the latest episode of Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know, the Duke of Sussex opened up about fatherhood, mental health, social media, and even indulged in some lighthearted cultural banter.

The podcast marked one of Harry’s most relaxed public appearances to date, complete with a few attempts at an American accent and a self-deprecating confession about his “chicken legs”.

In one of the funnier moments, Harry was asked to read the phrase “I ordered breadsticks with ranch dressing at Applebee’s” in an American accent.

After a few tries, Hasan told him: “That was decent.” But when Harry attempted a second line, the crew burst out laughing.

Laughing along, Harry quipped: “The laughter, it’s encouraging. Is it encouraging, or is it mocking me? I’m not sure.”

He even threw in a spirited “C’mon, Y’all!” and a “Yee-haw!” for good measure.

When Hasan asked what the most American thing he does is, Harry replied with a chuckle: “Surf. Is that American or Californian?”

He then admitted he doesn’t wear shorts inside restaurants and revealed: “I don’t really have legs for shorts. I’ve got chicken legs. No one should see my legs.”

The pair also revisited Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare. Hasan read aloud a passage where the prince revealed he used to shop at TK Maxx to stretch his “official clothing allowance” from King Charles.

Hasan read the line, about Harry buying discounted Gap and J.Crew items during end-of-year sales, with mock solemnity, as sad music played in the background.

“Bro, I’m sorry you had to go through that,” he said, prompting laughter from Harry, who replied: “It was hard, it was really hard. TK Maxx is now a special place in my memory.”

“I’m just glad to see that you’re on the other side of a discount rack,” Hasan said sincerely.

“Thank you. Appreciate that,” Harry responded with a smile.

Harry also joked about knighting Hasan if he happened to have a sword on hand.

‘We’ve had our fair share of beatings on social media’

The interview wasn’t all jokes. In more serious moments, the duke also spoke about the mental health crisis facing men and the dangerous impact of social media on young people.

“[Social media] is taking young men and young boys into very dark places, which should concern all of us,” Harry said.

“[We’ve] had our fair share of beatings on social media,” he added, referencing his and Meghan’s own experience in the public eye.

I’ve got chicken legs. No one should see my legs.

He shared that he and Meghan are particularly mindful of their children – Archie and Lilibet – and how they approach tech.

“We talk about it a lot. We will be way more cautious and hesitant of allowing our kids to have access to social media,” Harry said. “Our goal has to be to make sure that when our children get to that age, that the situation now is not the situation then.”

He also urged governments to take action: “People look to governments to protect them. Yet we have this lawlessness within this particular industry.”

The couple also recently travelled to New York to accept the Project Healthy Minds Humanitarians of the Year Award. The accolade recognised their advocacy in mental health and efforts to build a safer digital world for families.

The couple spoke passionately about their children and the dangers of the digital age.
