‘Meaning’ behind Prince Andrew’s ‘randy Andy’ nickname and where it came from

It reportedly dates back to his school days

Prince Andrew reportedly received the nickname “Randy Andy” – but what is the meaning behind it?

Andrew, 65, has faced much scandal in recent years due to his association with late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. He was also accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre – allegations he has always vehemently denied.

In August, Andrew became the subject of Andrew Lownie’s unauthorised biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York.

The book contained many allegations about Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. And Andrew’s nickname was also mentioned. Let’s take a look at the reported meaning behind the moniker.

Prince Andrew’s nicknames

The nickname Randy Andy was given to Prince Andrew in the press. He was also given the nickname of “the party prince”.

However, Andrew addressed this nickname in his BBC Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis.

When asked about him being “perceived by the public as being the party prince,” Andrew said: “I think that’s also a bit of a stretch. I don’t know why I’ve collected that title because I don’t… I never have really partied.

“I was single for quite a long time in the early 80s but then after I got married I was very happy and I’ve never really felt the need to go and party.”

However, the nickname of Randy Andy reportedly came earlier in Andrew’s life.

What is the meaning behind Randy Andy?

According to reports, Prince Andrew collected the nickname during his time at Gordonstoun school in Scotland.

As reported by The Sun, during an interview with Selina Scott on Wogan in 1985, Andrew said: “I’ll tell you exactly where it originated from. It was my second day at public school.

“I was unfortunate enough during my early days at Gordonstoun not to realise the rules of the house which is you weren’t allowed in the girls’ house.”

He reportedly added: “And I was unfortunately caught going through the door to the girls’ house – saying hello to somebody – and it stuck.

“Not many people use it nowadays and I don’t think that it actually fits today anyway.”

Andrew allegations
