Inside Adam Thomas’ failed restaurant business as he escapes £100K tax bill

Adam is still part of The Spinn Off bar

| Updated:

A career in TV isn’t the only venture Adam Thomas has taken, as the star previously owned a restaurant called The Spinn.

Back in September 2019, the former Emmerdale star set up the Manchester restaurant. But it was quickly hit by the Covid-19 lockdown. His company – Gatley Bar and Grill Ltd – was also set up in 2019 to handle the restaurants finances.

However, things took a turn and the restaurant was believed to have ‘gone bust’ with debts of almost £300K. Ultimately, Adam Thomas made the decision to close his restaurant. And now new reports show that he has managed to escape a huge £100K tax bill.

So, let’s have a look at everything we know about the restaurant and its closure.

2019 – The Spinn opens

Back in 2019, Adam Thomas made the huge career move from acting to restaurant owner. He, alongside close pal Scott Graham took steps to enter the world of entrepreneurship.

At the time, Adam admitted: “We’ve been wanting to do this for years, even when we were at school. We always talked about opening our own place.”

As for why they named it The Spinn, it turns out they were in a casino when they decided to take the plunge.

But unfortunately, the timing of things coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic.

2020 – COVID-19 pandemic restrictions kick in

Adam’s restaurant began to be impacted by the closures and restrictions put in place during lockdown.

As people weren’t allowed to eat out, it made it hard for them to keep their business going strong. But they kept trying, offering different kinds of services that were allowed within the restrictions.

2022 – Adam Thomas closes The Spinn restaurant

However, despite their best efforts, The Spinn closed its doors rather abruptly back in 2022. Residents in the area noticed the doors had been boarded up and the signs had been removed. But at that point, no official comments had been made.

Adam Thomas then confirmed to Manchester Evening News that the restaurant had closed for good. And his team were concentrating on other parts of the hospitality business.

He said: “Unfortunately we decided to close The Spinn. We did what we had to do with The Spinn and we learnt so much building our first venture. And more importantly we had an absolute blast.”

It was also then that they launched The Spinn off and Oh My Glaze. A bar in Stockport’s Underbanks, which is still open today.

2024 – Company ‘investigated’ for ‘overdue payments’

Last year, The Sun reported that there was an investigation launched into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

A report compiled by the number crunchers said that creditors will not see a penny of the failed firm.

The outlet quoted a report into Gatley Bar and Grill. It said: “We have corresponded with the director, ex-director and creditors. Carried out our initial SIP2 investigations and submitted our directors’ conduct report to the Department for Business and Trade within three months of our appointment.”

The report also claimed they “made an initial assessment” on what “further investigations may be appropriate”.

2025 – Adam Thomas walks away from £100K tax bill for restaurant

Now, today (August 29), The Sun has reported the firm has been dissolved without any money being paid to creditors.

The update comes from the accountants liquidating Adam Thomas’ restaurant. It said: “No divident has been paid to any class of creditor in the liquidation. Due to low levels of realisations, none was anticipated at the outset.”
