Lorraine Kelly has revealed why she was recently forced to undergo an operation.

Just over two weeks ago, TV presenter Lorraine Kelly revealed she had been hospitalised following emergency keyhole surgery to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as she had been feeling unwell for “a little while”.

However, Lorraine had not spoken about what illness led to her surgery – until today. She made her presenting comeback on ITV’s Lorraine this morning (May 19) and shared an update with fans.

Lorraine Kelly reveals why she had operation

Lorraine found herself in the interview seat this morning, as herself and Dr Hilary Jones swapped places, so that she could speak about her recovery.

While Lorraine confirmed she was “glad” to be back, she finally revealed the “terrible pain” that resulted in her operation.

The 65 year old said: “I was coming back from India. On the flight I had terrible terrible pain and it was an ovarian cyst that had burst.

When I say discomfort, Jesus, you know I’m stoic, but it was horrible.

“It was a bit of bleeding and discomfort. When I say discomfort, Jesus, you know I’m stoic, but it was horrible. I had a scan and was told that it looks like there is a dodgy ovary, so it was best to get it out completely.”

Dr Hilary agreed, explaining that while it may have been benign, it had the risk of turning into cancer one day.

He told her: “After the menopause, those cysts, usually they are benign. But they can become quite large and have the potential to turn malignant. So as a precautionary measure they remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes.”

How is Lorraine feeling now?

For Lorraine, getting the operation was “peace of mind” and thankfully she didn’t have a long hospital stay.

“I had a general aesthetic and I only stayed in for one night. When I got home, Steve [her husband] had to do everything – I’m not allowed to vacuum or anything.”

Speaking about whether or not she has been emotional over the removal of her ovaries, Lorraine admitted she hasn’t been. But that it has been an adjustment.

She said: “Because of my age, I’m nearly 66, obviously the baby ship has sailed, so I wasn’t emotional. But I do have to take a bit of testosterone, so there are things I have to do to get the balance right.”

However, she may be on the recovery road, but Lorraine is still having to take things easy and has to be “careful”.

Lorraine said: “I do get really tired and I have to be careful about that. Normally, I’m running around doing a lot, so I need to take it a little bit easier. But I am so glad to be back. It’s uncomfortable a little bit, so I just have to take it easy.”
