In For A Penny star Stephen Mulhern on ‘worrying’ illness which left him hospitalised: ‘This is the first time I’ve ever explained’

The poorly star took a break from Saturday Night Takeaway recently too

Dancing On Ice and In For A Penny host Stephen Mulhern was hospitalised last year following a secret illness.

The star’s health battle took place back in March 2023 and fans felt his absence after he missed a few episodes of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway at the time.

The poorly star was also off air – reportedly due to an unspecified illness – this month (April 2024) before he returned for the final episode.

“Stephen was due to be on a small section of the show, but sadly he was feeling a bit too poorly to perform,” said a source.

But Stephen himself has previously opened up about the illness that landed him in hospital last spring.

Last March, Stephen took to Twitter, explaining: “I’m on the mend, I’m happy to say, and looking forward to getting back to work soon. In the meantime… I’ll put my feet up and watch Saturday Night Takeaway tonight with the rest of you lot. Please don’t miss me too much! Lots of love, Stephen.”

In November 2023, the Deal Or No Deal host then revealed how he was feeling after indulging in a much-needed break.

“It’s really bizarre because this is the first time I’ve ever explained because I keep myself to myself. But I was in hospital. I had to have those two weeks off Saturday Night Takeaway. Now we’re alright. But it wasn’t good. It was a bit of a worrying time,” he told The Sun.

Since then, the telly star said that he had put good measures in his life to make sure he can complete long days of filming.

Speaking about Deal Or No Deal, he added at the time: “You’ve got to use every trick in the book because you know there’ll be people that will be crying, there will be people who will be angry, people who are gutted, and overjoyed. So you do just go: ‘Wow that was like a boxing match. When I finish filming I stay in the hotel next door and just go to bed.”
