King Juan Carlos says Princess Diana was ‘cold and distant’ as he denies affair

The former king has spoken out on his relationship with the late Princess of Wales

The former king of Spain, Juan Carlos I, has denied affair rumours with Princess Diana.

The now 87-year-old previously made headlines for being a “womaniser”. Now, he has had his say on one of his most famous alleged romances.

King Juan Carlos speaks out about Princess Diana affair rumours

The former king, who abdicated in 2014 and handed his crown to his son Felipe VI, has reportedly spilled the tea in his new, yet to be published memoir.

Evidently, the royal wants to set the record straight.

Royal observers have previously speculated over whether Juan Carlos seduced Princess Diana when she visited the Palace of Marivent in Mallorca during a trip with then-Prince Charles in the late 1980s.

However, this was never confirmed.

Juan Carlos has reportedly penned a description of Princess Diana’s behaviour in the book.

As reported by Vanity Fair, he described her as “cold, taciturn, distant,” except in the presence of paparazzi.

He also denied that they had an affair.

Royal Insider has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.

Of course, we know that Princess Diana had a strained and complicated relationship with the paparazzi.

She was often photographed and followed, her privacy invaded. Despite this, Diana shone in the limelight and was undeniably the People’s Princess – charming and engaging yet humble.

Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton claimed that Princess Diana found Juan Carlos “a little too attentive”.

According to Morton, Diana allegedly told friends after a visit to Mallorca: “I felt uncomfortable being left alone with him in a room, although I can assure you that nothing happened.”

Princess Diana’s marriage to Charles

It’s no secret that Diana and Charles’ marriage was turbulent. There were allegations of infidelity on both sides.

They ultimately split in 1992, before finalising their divorce in 1996.

In a 1994 interview, Charles admitted he had been faithful “until [the marriage] became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried”.

In her 1995 Panorama interview, Diana also admitted to being unfaithful. She confirmed to having an affair with James Hewitt.

A friend of Princess Diana allegedly claimed to Sally Bedell Smith, author of Diana in Search of Herself: Portrait of a Troubled Princess, that Diana would “collect” men.

“She used to collect men in the old-fashioned romantic way,” a friend of the late princess reportedly claimed.

“She would give you a look with lowered eyes… You knew deep down it was a game she played. And a very clever one in a way, not cynical, but by doing this, she won everybody over.”

Princess Diana’s ‘love’ for her bodyguard

Princess Diana was also linked to her bodyguard, Barry Mannakee.

Tina Brown, author of the The Diana Chronicles, explained: “For a woman in a golden cage, bodyguards are an obvious candidate for romantic fixation. A bodyguard may be the only real man a princess meets. His strong shoulders clear the path ahead in the crowd.

“His firm hand on her elbow guides his principal to the refuge of a waiting car.”

Reports claim Princess Diana also spoke adoringly of Mannakee in a tape recording.

“I was only happy when he was around,” the princess supposedly said of her bodyguard.

“I was like a little girl in front of him the whole time, desperate for praise. Desperate.”

However, a relationship between them was never confirmed.
