Jamie Theakston issues cancer update

In September 2024, Jamie announced he was taking time out from work after doctors found a lesion on his vocal chords. He then revealed he had Stage 1 Laryngeal cancer.

In a more positive update, Jamie shared he was free from cancer in January last year after being told he had a “one in 10 chance” of dying.

While hosting the Heart FM Breakfast Show with Amanda today, Jamie explained he was diagnosed in August 2024.

“I was offered the choice of having chemo or surgery, and I opted for the surgery. After three surgeries, my cancer had gone and it was a success,” he said.

“I never rang a bell though,” Jamie added before being passed one to ring. “Most people tend to ring the bell after they’ve had their chemo or when their radiotherapy finishes.”

“Mine was slightly different because I had the surgery. I then had to have monthly checkups for a year and I’m still in that cycle.”

Now in his second year, Jamie explained he goes into “two monthly checkups,” explaining that everything is currently fine.

Jamie admitted the cancer can return, to which Amanda said is a “scary” concept.

Agreeing, Jamie said, “There is always that fear,” before stating: “I’m reluctant to ring the bell because I’m still in treatment. But I also feel maybe if it inspires anyone else, then we should all give it a go.”

‘Cancer doesn’t have me!’

When Jamie first announced his diagnosis, he was grateful for all the support from his work colleagues after taking a break.

“So… I have cancer… but cancer doesn’t have me!” he wrote on Instagram. “The prognosis is very positive and I’m hoping to be back with you in October.”

“Until then, I leave you in the mostly capable hands of JK [Jason King] and Amanda [Holden]. Huge thanks to them and all the Global Family who have been unbelievably supportive.”

Jamie continued: “Be thankful for this day, and when I see you next, I’ll have a great story to tell.”
