Graham Norton on operation to fix ‘painful’ health issue that plagued him for years

He said he was taking his recovery 'seriously'

Graham Norton previously opened up about struggling with a hidden health issue.

The presenter has been a staple on screens since shooting to fame in the 1980s. From landing his own chat show, to hosting Wheel of Fortune – which returns today (December 27) – Graham is booked and busy.

But behind the scenes, Graham has been battling with a painful issue since he was a child – which led to him having surgery.

Graham Norton’s ‘painful’ and ‘sore’ health issue

This year, Graham revealed that his left shoulder “has always been a bit odd” since he broke his collarbone as a child.

Over the years though, the issue became “a bit painful” and “sore”. So, thinking enough is enough, he decided to have shoulder replacement surgery.

“I was struggling to sleep. So I had it done, and they put a bit of porcelain and plastic in there and it’s been great,” Graham said.

He added to Woman’s Weekly: “The pain’s all gone, and I’m still doing exercises and having physio. I probably should be doing more, but I’m taking it quite seriously and lifting light weights.”

Graham had to ‘face his own mortality’

Meanwhile, earlier this year Graham made a heartbreaking confession about his death fears before having the shoulder surgery.

“I was sitting in the hospital room and I wasn’t on any drugs or anything, it was before I was taken down, but you’re in the gown and you just feel so vulnerable, and you’re wearing those funny slippers,” he recalled on his Wanging On podcast.

Graham added: “I did feel quite emotional. I knew I would, but you are facing your own mortality. You just feel quite vulnerable in that moment. I was surprised I got as totes emosh as I did.”

Graham’s horror fall

This is not the first time Graham has needed hospital treatment. In 2009, he fell down the stairs and fractured two ribs, after returning home from hosting the glitzy BAFTA TV Awards.

“I’ve been to the hospital and given horse tranquilising pain-killing medication. There’s nothing they can do about broken ribs,” he said at the time to the BBC News website.

Because of his injuries, Graham had to pull out of playing drag queen Albin in the West End show La Cage aux Folles.

Watch Wheel of Fortune on Saturday (December 27) at 7:30pm on ITV1.
