Kate Garraway has a new documentary coming out next week about her husband Derek Draper‘s final year of his life.
The ITV show – titled Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story – will air on Tuesday (March 26) as it explores Derek’s personal struggles with his illness as well as the challenges faced by people in the UK living with serious illness and disability. It’ll also focus on carers.
On Good Morning Britain on Thursday (March 21), Kate opened up about the doc and shared her “wish” for it.

She told co-host Ed Balls of the show: “It’s been pretty emotional actually. It makes you want to jump in the screen and give him a hug.
“You can’t quite believe that he’s not with us to watch his story. But hopefully, it will be very useful for others that are going through the same thing. That’s the dream and the wish.”
Speaking about Derek, Kate said: “He was his own man until the end and it was his idea to make this. So hopefully, when it’s aired next Tuesday, it’ll bring a lot of help to other people who are in the situation Derek was in, with long-term illness, and those around them that care for them.”
Kate revealed that it was Derek’s idea to do another documentary. Derek’s Story is the third documentary that Kate has done. It comes following Finding Derek and then Caring for Derek.

In a press interview for the upcoming third doc, Kate said: “I remember so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself.
“I hadn’t planned to make another one. At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four-month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.”

Derek Draper died in January at the age of 56. It came after his near four-year battle with Covid-19 and its after-effects.
Sharing Derek’s final message about the documentary, Kate said: “I asked Derek, ‘What would be your main message?’ And he said, ‘Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love.'”
