The ITV documentary followed Derek Draper's final year before his death

Kate Garraway said she expects to receive “flack” over her new documentary about her late husband Derek Draper‘s health and the care system.

Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story aired on Tuesday night and detailed Derek’s final year of his life before his death in January. It also documented the issues in the UK health care system.

Ahead of the documentary airing, Kate appeared on The One Show to discuss what she wants to come from the documentary.

Speaking to Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas, Kate said: “Today I have had social workers, health workers, doctors, nurses, carers that do it for love, carers that are paid, all saying please say something because we can’t.

“And I know I will get some flack for it but I just feel like we are all going to need this.

“We are all going to need this for ourselves or someone we love and it isn’t a blame game but we have to find a way of fixing it.

“You’ve got to have something to catch you when we fall and it shouldn’t feel like you are trying to be caught out.”

Kate Garraway debt

Elsewhere, Kate recently opened up about being in debt following Derek’s care. She explained that Derek’s basic care was costing £16,000 a month.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, Kate admitted she feels “ashamed” over being in debt. She explained: “I am ashamed of the fact that I am in debt. I have an incredible job that I love, that’s very well paid.

“I’m not a carer, travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage. I’m somebody who is very well paid and so I just feel ashamed that I couldn’t make it work.”

She also spoke about the debt in the documentary last night. Kate said to the camera: “Derek’s care costs more than my salary from ITV. And that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay for any household bills. Before you pay for anything for the kids. So we are at a crunch point.

“I am in debt. I can’t earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek’s care. And I can’t even use the money I do have to support Derek’s recovery because it’s going on the basics all the time.”
