One of those guests is Tim Vine. And yes, there is a family link. Here is everything you need to know.

Who is Tim Vine?

Tim was born in Cheam, London, on March 4, 1967, which makes him 58.

His father Guy, who died in 2018, worked as a lecturer in civil engineering. His mother Diana worked as a doctors’ receptionist.

Tim’s older brother is Jeremy Vine, the TV and radio broadcaster.

Jeremy, 60, fronts The Jeremy Vine Show each weekday morning and now also hosts Celebrity Puzzling.

The brothers attended Lynton Prep, then Aberdour School, followed by Epsom College.

They also have a younger sister, Sonya, who keeps out of the spotlight. She has built a successful career as an artist.

Church upbringing

Tim and Jeremy grew up in a strict Christian household and both remain practising Christians.

Jeremy previously spoke about faith in an interview with The Guardian and mentioned Tim during the conversation.

He said: “If you’re introduced to high-octane Christianity young, you naturally reject it and then, cautiously, come back.

“That was the process I went through, but I don’t begrudge that.

“Mum and Dad had a phase where they probably wanted us to be missionaries, but when your middle child announces he’s going to be a comedian, you realise the game’s up.”

Jeremy and Tim Vine’s punk band

Before broadcasting and stand up fame, the brothers tried their luck in music.

In the 80s, they formed a punk band called The Flared Generation with their friend Simon Williams.

They dreamed of matching the success of The Jam and The Fall. In reality, they struggled to secure gigs, even in local pubs around Cheam.

So they changed tactics. Instead of chasing cool, they decided to embrace the opposite.

Jeremy once explained: “We had a meeting and we decided what we’ve got to do is reverse it so instead of the coolest band we need to become the least cool band in the world.”

He added: “My brother’s very talented with music so he wrote songs like a song called Sensible Shoes and a song called University Sweatshirts and one called Flared Revolution.

“We found suddenly we got incredible amounts of coverage because it was something that wasn’t happening anywhere else.”

The gamble paid off in publicity terms. Smash Hits dubbed them “the most unfashionable punk band in the country”.

They became well known locally but never broke through nationally.

Jeremy later joined the BBC as a reporter and researcher before landing a presenting role on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme in 1989.

Tim, meanwhile, headed down a different path.

Tim Vine’s comedy career

Tim chose comedy and started out while working as a security guard, performing at open mic nights.

He quickly realised that rapid fire one liners brought the biggest laughs and built his act around them.

In 1996, he met Lee Mack and the pair struck up a strong friendship. They later appeared together on The Sketch Show, Not Going Out and Let’s Play Darts for Comic Relief.

Tim has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival several times and has racked up numerous pantomime roles.

His television appearances include Celebrity Countdown, Celebrity Squares and Taskmaster. Now he joins his brother on Celebrity Puzzling.

In October 2004, Tim entered the record books with a Guinness World Record for telling 499 jokes in one hour.

He held the record for a decade before Australian comedian Taylor Goodwin surpassed it in 2024 with 550 jokes in an hour.

Jeremy and Tim Vine on Celebrity Puzzling

Tim joins as one of tonight’s guests on Celebrity Puzzling. The other is Welsh broadcaster Owain Wyn Evans.

Introducing him, Jeremy jokes: “Joining Sally, a comedian who once told 499 jokes in an hour. That was a long Christmas dinner, I tell you. It’s my own brother, Tim Vine!”

He also encourages Tim to share the story of his cameo in Neighbours, where he asked for directions outside Lassiter’s.

In the show, teams go head to head to solve picture based puzzles and crack a series of clues.

Celebrity Puzzling continues weeknights at 7pm on Channel 5.
