Eamonn Holmes says Declan Donnelly can handle presenting solo

According to This Morning, Dec will also front BGT without a co-host

| Updated:

Eamonn Holmes has said Declan Donnelly is an experienced enough presenter to handle hosting solo.

Dec is fronting the final two episodes of Saturday Night Takeaway while telly partner Ant McPartlin steps down from TV work.

And on Friday, This Morning’s showbiz expert said he’d spoken to Simon Cowell’s camp and it was likely Dec would also host the BGT live shows solo, rather than get in a temporary co-host.

There had been rumours that Britain’s Got More Talent host Stephen Mulhern could step up.

During the showbiz segment with Gordon Smart, there was reference to rumours Dec could get a last-minute co-host for Saturday Night Takeaway, such as Cat Deeley.

But Eamonn, 58, said: “Why does he need anybody? He can handle that show.”

Gordon then told Eamonn and Ruth Langsford that he’d spoken to Simon Cowell’s camp, who had told him Dec would likely also host the Britain’s Got Talent live shows alone.

The auditions episodes of Britain’s Got Talent, featuring both Ant and Dec, have already been recorded.

Gordon said: “There are pre-records with Ant involved but we spoke to Cowell’s people and what looks like is going to happen is Dec will go on on his own when the show goes out in April, so he will crack on on his own, which I think is the right thing to do.”

Eamonn agreed: “You don’t dilute the brand, you don’t pollute the brand in any way, you don’t have people thinking about his pairing with anybody else. I think it’s quite logical and Declan is such a good presenter, anyway.”

While Gordon said he has spoken to Simon’s people, there has been no official word yet from Britain’s Got Talent on Dec presenting solo.

ED! has contacted the BGT team for comment.

The auditions episodes of the ITV show were filmed in January and February, with Ant and Dec both on hand to introduce acts, reassure them before they took to the stage, and generally keep things flowing.

It’s not been confirmed when BGT will actually air its new series, but generally it kicks off on ITV around April.

Once the pre-recorded auditions episodes air, then we move on to the live shows.

Ant, 42, has been charged with drink-driving and is due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on April 4.

He has stepped down from current TV work.

This weekend’s Saturday Night Takeaway has been cancelled, while Dec will front the final two episodes of the series by himself.

Dec confirmed this week: “Whilst I never thought I’d be in this position, after much discussion and careful consideration we’ve decided that the remaining two shows of this series of Saturday Night Takeaway will go ahead.”

“We made a promise to take hundreds of deserving winners to Florida to watch the series finale, and we will honour that.

“Everyone at ITV and the Takeaway team feels we owe it to the audience to complete the series.”

The broadcaster said: “ITV can confirm that Saturday Night Takeaway, presented by Declan Donnelly, will return on March 31, and the series finale will be taking place at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida a week later.”

Dec will likely have support from his Saturday Night Takeaway colleagues Stephen Mulhern and Scarlett Moffatt.
