Scarlett Moffatt’s heartbreaking response to ‘vile’ body shaming trolls: ‘Crying my eyes out!’

'It needs to stop!'

Scarlett Moffatt previously revealed she was left ‘crying her eyes out’ after being “attacked” online by body-shaming trolls.

The beloved TV presenter shot to fame when she appeared on Channel 4’s Gogglebox. Since then, she’s become a regular on screens, from stints on I’m A Celebrity… to Pilgrimage: Road to the Scottish Highlands – which airs today (October 12).

However, over the years, Scarlett has had a complex and very public journey with her body image. She has also been the victim of online trolling, with many nasty comments aimed at her weight and appearance.

Scarlett Moffatt ‘crying her eyes out’

In 2018, Scarlett Moffatt slammed online trolls who criticised her appearance while she was on Love Island’s AfterSun show.

“Hard to pretend I’m okay and be a good role model to others about how it’s okay to be just you when the comments from grown adults on here have resulted in me crying my eyes out!” Scarlett declared.

“I hope you’re very proud of yourselves,” she added before saying it is “no wonder the amount of people, including myself, with social anxiety is increasing”.

She added: “Feel like I can’t even film TV shows without hating the way that I look after. From constantly being attacked because of my size and my appearance! Feel like I need to speak out for others!! This is not fair this needs to stop!!”

Issuing a plea, Scarlett went on: “Please to the people out there who aren’t loving themselves right now. Please don’t let other people stop you from doing what you love. Real beauty shines from within.”

Scarlett received ‘vile and bullying comments’

Meanwhile in 2019, Scarlett again was forced to hit back at body-shaming trolls. The TV star shared a screenshot of her private messages from a rude troll who called her a “fat [bleep]”.

Speaking directly to her fans, Scarlett said in an Instagram video: “So I just want to say also, apologies that last post has swearing in. But I just think it’s really important for people to see some of the daily messages that I get.”

Referencing Jesy Nelson’s heartbreaking documentary, Scarlett said: “I’m really pleased that Jesy Nelson done the show on bringing trolls to the forefront and making people understand the effect it can have on you. Especially if you don’t have a good support network around you, I can imagine it’s really, really difficult.

“People say because you’re on the TV or if you’re in the public eye then people are allowed an opinion. Yes I would agree to that to an extent, but when people are using vile and bullying comments.”

‘It needs a to stop!’

She continued: “At the end of the day, being a TV presenter is my job and if I was in any other job and I was getting emails like that from staff or from people, they would be getting warnings and sacked, something would be done about it.

“People need to remember it’s okay having an opinion. But when it’s hurting people’s feelings and when it’s vile, abusive language, that’s when it needs to stop!

“Educating children – the majority of the time it’s not children – but if we start and drum this into kids young as they get older they’ll understand that this is wrong.

“The majority of the comments I get are from around 25 to 50-year-old men. They seem to love calling me names, God knows why.”
