Good Morning Britain star Sean Fletcher has candidly opened up about the death of his mum.
The presenter – who joined the ITV show in 2014 – was left heartbroken when his beloved mum, Carol died from bowel cancer nearly two decades ago at the age of 54.
And recently, Sean reflected on his mum’s death, revealing she kept her diagnosis from him for nearly two years.
Good Morning Britain’s Sean Fletcher on mum’s death
Sean’s mum Carol tragically died in 2006 after a battle with bowel cancer. In a recent interview with the Express, Sean spoke about his mother’s death that happened just weeks after he found out she had bowel cancer.
“It was all quite quick. She kind of kept it from me, and didn’t tell me that she had bowel cancer,” dad-of-two Sean said.
The GMB star recalled that at the time, his mum Carol was living in Essex while he was in Wales. As a result, Sean said he had to “arrange trips to come and see her”.
‘Three and a half weeks later, she was dead’
Sean went on to reveal that his mum “masked” her symptoms quite well. What’s more, it was only when he visited her in hospital and saw she was around people who “looked close to death” that he started to ask questions.
“I managed to find out [she had bowel cancer], and three and a half weeks later, she was dead,” Sean said. An emotional Sean went on: “It was just horrific, and for two of those weeks, I mean, it actually gets me now, those weeks she didn’t talk.
“I literally had a week and a half with her because she just spiralled really quickly. It was heartbreaking.”
Sean says ‘it was absolutely devastating’
Meanwhile in 2016, Sean revealed that as an only child, he struggled to cope with the loss of his mum.
“It’s always difficult losing a parent but I’ve thought about it long and hard since. It was absolutely devastating but at least I had the chance to say goodbye,” he told Western Mail.
Sean added: “I didn’t know how I would get through it but it’s amazing how people have the capacity to deal with these things. My mum was so supportive during my career and she was incredibly proud.
“When she was first diagnosed I had just started on BBC Wales and even though she lived in England she used to find the channel and ring my up every time to say she’d seen me on TV.”
