Joe Sugg on being ‘very self-conscious’

Back in 2019, Joe opened up about his mental health and also his insecurities, alongside fellow vloggers in a YouTube video.

“I used to be very, very self-conscious about my skin. In particular spots on my skin, but now I don’t mind as much,” Joe said.

He continued: “I learnt that people around you don’t care that much about yourself. They don’t notice the things that you notice a lot more.”

Joe also revealed that for a good few years in a bid to hide his red spots on his face, he used concealer.

He told The Sun: “Since halfway through 2017 until now, this is the first time I’ve not used makeup for a video.

“I used to hate watching back videos of myself. Because the only thing I’d take away from that video, the only thing I’d focus on from that video was my forehead and my T-Zone.”

Joe was ‘so scared’ to look through comments

Joe continued: “I check through the comments and I was so scared to look through the comments. Straight away I’d look for certain words like ‘oh your skin’, ‘I can tell you are wearing makeup’.”

Joe’s insecurities got so bad that his social life started to be affected too.

He said that he would say to his friends: “‘My skin is really bad. I don’t feel like going out.’ They completely understood and they said: ‘I’ve been through the exact same thing.'”

Fortunately, Joe was able to turns around, for both his mental health and skin, after his skin was improved following advice from a doctor.

Watch Joe on The Chase Celebrity Special on Sunday (November 30) at 3:15pm on ITV1.
