‘You never want to lose your life’: Samantha Womack admitted she ‘started preparing’ for her death following cancer diagnosis

Samantha announced she had cancer in 2022

Actress Samantha Womack, who is appearing on Sunday Brunch today (March 1), previously admitted she started to prepare for her death following her cancer diagnosis.

The 53-year-old, who famously played Ronnie Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer while paying tribute to Olivia Newton-John in 2022.

In December 2022, Samantha shared a positive update that she was now cancer-free. However, that didn’t stop her from preparing herself for the worst amid her diagnosis.

Samantha Womack started planning her death during cancer battle

In June last year, Samantha told The Sun: “You obviously never want to lose your life, but cancer forces you to look into that cupboard. I started preparing for that from the beginning, because you do realise you could be close to possibly having that final moment.

“I started preparing for the ‘what’s going to happen if I’ve only got six months.’ But actually, once you’ve looked in that cupboard, it’s not as scary as you think, I felt like, ‘OK, that cupboard is there, and I don’t know when it’s going to be fully open,’” she continued.

After six months of treatment, Samantha admitted she now has “far less money” than she ever had. However, it has made her realise what is important to her.

“I’ve definitely changed as a human. If I feel like I need a break, or feel like I need a check-up, or if I’m actually really not comfortable with a job or I’m uncomfortable with a group of people, I just trust my voice in my head so much more than I ever did. If I feel like something is wrong, not just health-wise, just anything, if I feel like something’s not a good fit for me, I’m far more confident now to be able to say, ‘Do you know what? I just don’t think this is for me. And that’s because my perception has shifted,” she explained.

‘I still worry about it’

The actor reflected on how financial insecurity shaped much of her early life, describing money worries as a long-standing source of “anxiety”.

Samantha explained that growing up without stability left her craving the kind of financial security that would make her feel physically safe and in control of their surroundings.

However, since surviving her cancer battle, she has admitted to “turning down more work now than I ever have”, explaining: “Normally, as my bank balances disappears, that anxiety would normally keep me awake at night, and I still worry about it, but it doesn’t take over my entire body because I know I’m safe.”

While Samantha has been cancer-free for over three years, she faced fresh heartbreak after her aunt Angie Best was recently diagnosed with advanced colon cancer.
