Jason Donovan on substance abuse

In his 2007 autobiography, Between The Lines, Jason candidly opened up about his drug addiction. The TV star revealed that he had hit rock bottom by 1998.

He recalled: “I’d tried to party with the big boys, tried to be so very rock and roll, but all I had done was make a complete [bleep]ing idiot of myself. Who was I trying to fool? There was nothing rock and roll about me.”

Jason also recalled a terrifying situation that happened while at Kate Moss’ 21st birthday party, in which Jason had a “cocaine seizure”.

Jason shared: “My heart was racing, my vision was blurring and I was becoming disoriented. I tried to steady myself but my legs buckled under me and I fell to the floor.

“I am not sure what happened next but l do know that someone had pulled the plug on the music and was calling for an ambulance.

“A crowd had circled round me and Michael [Hutchence] was standing over me trying to empty my trouser pockets. ‘Have you got anything on you?’ he kept asking me.

“I tried to speak but couldn’t. ‘It wouldn’t be cool if anything was found on you by the medics,’ he whispered.”

Jason on tackling his addiction

Fortunately, Jason managed to kick his addictions after wife Angela Malloch fell pregnant with the first of their three children: actress Jemma, Zac and Molly.

On Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2010, Jason gushed over his wife and credited her with his recovery. He said: “She was a woman who came around and stood up to me and made me accountable.”

Jason then shared that he “gradually falling out of love” with cocaine when Jemma was born in 2000.

Meanwhile, in a 2019 interview, Jason reflected on his past and said: “No life is perfect, you know, and I’m far from it.”

He added to PA Media: “I got very lucky very young, I got a little sidetracked by my own desire to think that by going out there and ‘crashing the car’, as I see it, that I was going to be cool.”
