Two years on, it is hard to forget the lowkey announcement from Kensington Palace about Kate Middleton’s surgery that quietly set off one of the most talked about royal sagas in recent memory.
This weekend marks the second anniversary of the moment it was revealed that Kate had undergone abdominal surgery.
What was initially framed as a routine, planned procedure soon unfolded into a deeply personal health battle that played out under intense public scrutiny.
Kate Middleton issues apology as she undergoes surgery
On January 17, 2024, Kensington Palace confirmed in a statement that the Princess of Wales had undergone “planned abdominal surgery” the day before at The London Clinic.
The palace stressed that the operation had been successful, but made it clear that Kate faced a lengthy recovery. She was expected to remain in hospital for between 10 and 14 days and would step back from public duties until after Easter.
Unusually, the statement also carried a personal message from Kate herself.
It read: “The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible.”
She also highlighted her determination to keep life as normal as possible for her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
At the time, the response was largely sympathetic. Only weeks earlier, Kate had appeared in good spirits during the traditional Christmas Day walkabout at Sandringham.
In the build up to the festive period, her diary had been full. She opened a children’s surgical unit at Evelina London, hosted the Together at Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey, and attended the Buckingham Palace Diplomatic Reception.
Kate left hospital on January 29. By late February, however, concern began to grow. When Prince William suddenly withdrew from a memorial service on February 27 citing a “personal matter,” online speculation about Kate’s absence surged.
By March, wild theories about Kate were sending the internet into meltdown with some people even bizarrely claiming she had been cloned. The palace’s silence only intensified the public frenzy.
Photoshop scandal
By late February, a palace spokesperson reiterated that there would be no further updates unless something significant changed.
“We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter,” they said, adding that Kate was “doing well”.
Matters escalated on March 10 when Kensington Palace released a Mother’s Day photograph of Kate with her children, said to have been taken by Prince William. Intended to calm speculation, it instead had the opposite effect.
Within hours, major agencies including the Associated Press issued a rare kill notice, citing concerns that the image had been digitally altered.
Online users had already pointed out odd details. Princess Charlotte’s sleeve appeared misaligned, a knee looked blurred, and Kate’s zip seemed off centre.
The following day, Kate addressed the situation herself.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she wrote. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion.”
By then, speculation had reached boiling point.
Kate announces cancer diagnosis
On March 22, 2024, the Princess of Wales finally addressed the rumours head on in a personal video message.
Sitting on a bench in a garden setting, Kate revealed that tests following her surgery had discovered cancer and that she had already started preventative chemotherapy.
“It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment,” she explained. “But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them.”
She thanked supporters for their kindness and asked for privacy as she continued treatment.
What followed was a wave of global support. In September 2024, Kate confirmed she had completed chemotherapy. By January 2025, she shared that she was officially in remission.
She said: “It is a relief to now be in remission. I remain focused on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”
Now, two years on from that first announcement, Kate has steadily returned to public life. What began as a brief palace update became a reminder of the very human realities behind royal duty.
