Kate Garraway shares plans for family holiday with children after husband Derek Draper’s death

She previously expressed how the family were 'at a crunch point'

| Updated:

Kate Garraway has shared her plans for a holiday with her kids following her husband Derek Draper’s death.

Kate‘s family was rocked back at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 when her husband Derek contracted Covid-19 .

Derek, with whom Kate shared teenage children Darcey and Billy, was hospitalised for months due to his condition. The stricken former lobbyist was also placed in a medically-induced coma at one point, and is believed to have suffered severe organ damage among other complications.

Derek’s death was announced by Kate in January, weeks after it was reported 56-year-old Derek had suffered a heart attack.

And now, Kate has revealed she hopes to go on a first family holiday since their devastating loss.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, 56, recently told MailOnline she expected the break to prove “challenging”.

However, she is determined to do “something lovely” after such a difficult time for her family.

“We will get a family holiday,” Kate is reported to have said. “But it’s going to be a bit challenging because it’s a different kind of family set up that we have now.”

In her most recent ITV documentary Derek’s Story, Kate explained how Derek’s illness affected the family financially.

She revealed it cost £16,000 a month to pay for Derek’s care, which left them in debt.

Kate said at the time: “Derek’s care costs more than my salary from ITV. And that is before you pay for a mortgage. Before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point.”

She went on: “I am in debt. I can’t earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek’s care and I can’t even use the money I do have to support Derek’s recovery because it’s going on the basics all the time.”

Kate also explained the family did not receive government support for Derek’s care.

Hopefully she, Darcey, and Billy can enjoy a restful break after enduring such terrible times.
