A close friend of Princess Diana has opened up about how King Charles “never returned the compliment” when she would write him romantic cards.
Paul Burrell, who was Diana’s butler and friend for a decade up until her death in 1997, said Diana was “such a romantic” and was “very much in love” with Charles.
Diana and Charles were married from 1981 to 1996, but they split in 1992. They shared sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
Princess Diana ‘sent romantic cards’ to Prince Charles
Speaking on behalf of Prime Casino, Paul Burrell said: “Diana was a girl of her time, and she was such a romantic. She did send romantic cards to Prince Charles.
“She was very much in love with him. It’s such a sad thing to say that he never loved her and so he never returned the compliment.
“He wasn’t romantic. He tried to be, but he didn’t have a romantic bone in his body.”
The king is now married to Queen Camilla. They tied the knot in 2005 and will mark 20 years of marriage in April.
King Charles ‘made up for his lack of romance’ with Camilla, Paul Burrell says
Paul went on to talk about King Charles‘ marriage to Queen Camilla.
He said: “It is astonishing to think that Charles and Camilla’s wedding anniversary is 20 years this year. Charles made up for his lack of romance with Camilla.
It’s such a sad thing to say that he never loved her and so he never returned the compliment.
“He’s been married to Camilla longer than he was married to Diana. That is astonishing. And I’m thinking to myself, wow, what did you do in the 20 years married to Camilla? I can’t think of anything.”
Paul added: “But what did he do in his short marriage with Diana? A lot. There’s more public record of his life with Diana than there is with Camilla. That tells you something.”
Moment Charles and Diana’s marriage ‘started to deteriorate’
It comes after a royal author spoke about Charles and Diana’s turbulent marriage in a new book – Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants.
Tom Quinn claimed the pair had different interests, which became evident on their honeymoon.
A hunting and fishing expert spoke to the author and claimed that Diana found traditional outdoor activities at Balmoral – the royal family’s Scottish residence – boring. But Charles was the opposite.

They reportedly said: “That, I think, was the start of the deterioration of their relationship, whatever people say about it being entirely about the other woman!”
The “other woman” claims refer to Charles’ alleged affair with Camilla during his marriage to Diana.
