Love Your Weekend star Alan Titchmarsh feared he’d die after being airlifted to hospital with gallstones

'I was hanging on in there'

Alan Titchmarsh – who is hosting Love Your Weekend today (Saturday, May 4) – once suffered a terrifying health scare in which he hoped death was on its way as the pain became unbearable.

The telly fave, 74, shot to fame back in the late ‘70s – and since then, he’s not stopped.

However, Alan once feared he was dying and ended up being airlifted to hospital after being left in “agony.”

Love Your Weekend star Alan Titchmarsh feared he was going to die

Back in 2016, Alan, whose family has a history of heart disease, thought he was having a heart attack. At the time, he had just eaten fish and chips, followed by Easter eggs.

I hoped I wasn’t going to die, and I was hanging on in there

Speaking about the ordeal, he said: “I hoped I wasn’t going to die, and I was hanging on in there but the pain was so acute at one point I thought it might be a blessed relief.”

After he had finished eating, Alan started suffering pains in his chest, with the pain then progressing to what he dubbed “agony.”

Alan added to The Sunday Post: “Actually I think it frightened my wife more, because of my family history, of course. The men in my family have a tendency to die from heart disease at a relatively young age.”

Wife Alison then called the emergency services and Alan was taken to the nearest hospital to his Isle of Wight home, St Mary’s. The telly star was then airlifted to Portsmouth’s Queen Alexandra Hospital. There, he was diagnosed with gallstones and had to undergo surgery to remove his gall bladder.

Alan, now 74, takes statins everyday. He has also outlived his father who sadly passed away at just 62 from a heart attack.

Alan Titchmarsh on health

Alan has been open about his health over the years. In 2021, Alan spoke about his weight gain during lockdown. He admitted feeling “cross” about it.

He told Radio Times at the time: “I was doing up to 26,000 steps a day and eating like a horse. But still losing weight because I was doing all the manual work.

“Then I broke my ankle at the beginning of September. I slipped on wet grass and was on crutches for six weeks. So I’ve put half a stone back on, which made me very cross because I was determined to keep it off.”
