Dylan Dreyer admitted on the Today show that she was scared while she was on location last week reporting on Hurricane Irma from Florida.
The 36-year-old mom of one confessed to her cohosts Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones that she was nervous while covering the life-threatening storm, which – as of Wednesday evening – has left 30 people dead across three states.
But it was a sweet text message from her husband back home in New York that gave her the courage to carry on.
“I’m gonna be honest. As a meteorologist I understand the situation,” she told her colleagues on Sept. 13.
“I'm not a storm chaser of tornadoes. I understand that that is out of my comfort zone and I'm not going to chase a storm because I know the danger of it.
“Going into, at the time a Category 5 hurricane, even if it weakened to a Category 4, I really didn't know what to expect with 150-mile-per-hour winds.
“Are we staying in a hotel safe enough? I had visions of putting my mattress up against the window…”
At that point Dylan said she reached out to her husband Brian Fichera, an NBC Nightly News cameraman, with whom she has a nearly 9-month-old son.
She said: “So I texted Brian and I said, ‘I’m scared. I’m actually kind of scared for this.
“’I know I’m with a good crew. I know I’m with a good team of people and we’re going to keep each other safe.’
“So I sent him this and I said, ‘I've got a lot back home. With [our son] Calvin now I do get nervous being out on the road.’”
Dylan then shared a screen grab of the text message exchange between them.
She said: “And his response was, ‘You know you’re smart. You’re athletic. I believe in you 100 percent.’
“And then he goes on, ‘If you can give birth, you can handle anything.’
“So it just kind of gave me that boost I needed. I knew I had my heart at home and we ended up being very, very safe.”

Always one to lighten the mood, Al then made his colleagues giggle by adding: “Not to take anything away but he sent me that same message.”
